PSA FOR WHITE PEOPLE REGARDING CULTURAL APPROPRIATION
No, I am not flattered by your cultural appropriation.
[captions]
“The audacity for people to tell me that I should be flattered when they appropriate my culture, and it’s a good thing to share culture, excuse me! Were you absent for the part where my ancestors got colonized and prosecuted for practicing their culture? When I wear my traditional clothes in public, I get made fun of! Or if I speak my language, people think I’m talking smack about them. They throw people that look like me, or dress like my parents in Guantanamo Bay, or pass laws to justify their surveillance. I am criminalized because I practice my own culture! So, no! I am not flattered in the slightest when I see you making a mockery out of my clothes, and not recognizing your oppressive context in history. Your system continues to kill people of my culture. So how dare you think that I would find it appealing to see my clothes on your white skin. If you really wanted to show appreciation for my culture, then you would vocalize your disdain for American Domestic and Foreign Policy that targets people of my culture. You would be more politically active, and putting an end to normalized hatred and harassment of my people. You are a cultural appropriator! Because you see me, and you think my people’s clothes are a costume that you can pair with the outfit you just purchased from Urban Outfiters. Get out of my face with your culture appropriation, and recognize your white privilege. How dare you think cultural appropriation is a good thing!”
